“Blank Pages” Lyric Video
Client: Jordan Khalaf (IG @jordankhalaf1)
Brief: Create a lyric video that matches the 2000s punk rock vibe of the song. Artistically, it needs to match up with the album cover art.
Influences: We the Kings “Sad Song” Lyric Video
Process:
Jordan gave me two references to direct the style of the lyric video. I settled on creating a handdrawn look without doing actual cel animation
Using Illustrator and Photoshop, I built a couple “doodles” that would animate around the text.
To create the hand drawn look, I used turbulent displace, and using expressions I faked a lower frame rate to sell the effect.
The song is called “Blank Pages” so of course we had various “pages” of lyrics cycling throughout. A standard page turn transition felt too basic so I animated paper cards flying in and out, matching the growing frenzy of the music
At the song’s climax, the animation needed to be as chaotic as possible so I piled every animation on top of itself, and layered the lyrics on top of each other with different colors. Turbulent displace made the colors look like they were melting into each other
